A high creatinine isn’t a diagnosis — staging needs two draws. What to track at home, and what to ask your vet.

What the markers measure
BUN is a waste product the kidneys help clear. It can also move with hydration, diet, and gastrointestinal bleeding, so one result has limited context.
Creatinine is more specific to filtration but is affected by muscle mass. SDMA is less affected by muscle mass. Urine specific gravity shows how concentrated the urine is.
Why urine changes the conversation
Raised waste products mean something different when urine is concentrated than when urine is dilute. This is why a veterinarian may ask for a urine sample beside the blood panel.
